Annual review 2007/08
Stigma and discrimination
Better funding, better world
Making a difference
The Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) sets out Government spending for the next three years, as well as setting cross-departmental targets. The 2007 CSR meant an opportunity for more investment in the field of mental health.
Making it happen
- Our submission to the CSR included a vital review of evidence produced for us by the London School of Economics, which revealed the cost-effectiveness of psychological therapies.
- We lobbied MPs and Peers on the need for further investment and a target on reducing the social exclusion associated with mental illness. More than 50 MPs publicly declared their support for our campaign.
Making an impact
- In 2008, the Treasury announced the first ever cross-Government target on severe mental illness.
- Public Service Agreement 16 on reducing social exclusion specifically states that more people with severe mental illness must be in long-term housing and in part or full-time employment.
- The agreement also sets out plans for better access to talking therapies, increased supported living arrangements, specialised employment support and advice, and a strategy for prison mental health.
This is one of only 30 targets for the whole of Government for 2008 to 2011. It is a major achievement to have severe mental illness specifically mentioned.
Moving forward
We’re making sure our members and activists know about the new Government targets and have produced ‘A new era for mental health’ explaining how Rethink’s work can help to achieve them. We’re making sure people are able to use supported housing services and get employment advice that’s specific to their situation. We’re also writing a guide for employers, service users and carers about employment rights relating to severe mental illness.
